An object in motion tends to stay in motion.
An object at rest tends to stay at rest.
Creativity’s the same way.
It’s a muscle. You need to work it out or it atrophies. But start to stretch it and it snaps back stronger than before.
Last year I felt creatively stagnant. So I started writing on Substack—just to get moving again. Then I stepped back and shifted that energy elsewhere.
Photo workshop in Banff. Retreat in the Dolomites. My first photo essay around wild skating on Lake Abraham…shooting self-portraits alone meant some shots I’d envisioned just weren’t possible, but it stretched my creative skills.
In Slovenia, I shot more self-portraits in Airbnb corners, trying to document this transitional period. I haven’t shared most of those, but they were fun to create (and a little scary to share.)
During Friday’s gravel shoot, I pushed my technical skills—slow shutter, panning, playing with blur and motion. I wanted to capture the feeling of cycling. That energy, freedom, the way it feels like flying.
Now I have more ideas than ever. I’m bringing this momentum into work, into the new brand we’re building. I’ve been exploring AI as a tool to push my thinking and iterate rapidly. I’ve always been a fast worker, so having something that lets me move at the pace of my ideas? The momentum it creates is addictive.
How are you stretching your creativity?
